I had heard about the shooting during my workday, but only that there was another school shooting. When I got home and turned on CNN I found out the details. I called my 12-year old son, Nathan down from his bedroom. He is the only child I have still living at home, although the other four are grown and live within five miles of us. When Nathan came down I hugged him and started crying for all those lost lives. He, in his way, was trying to comfort me. He then went to turn the tv channel only to get more of the same, so he turned it off. He was trying to get me to stop crying. I told him that the facts didn't change just because the tv was off.Several years ago I lost a child who was in the hospital for 19 days. I didn't know why and was very upset. We sued the hospital, the doctors, and the drug company. We didn't get rich over this suit and that wasn't the point anyway. During one of our talks with the lawyer, he said that hospitals across the country were following this suit and changing their policies so they wouldn't get sued in the future. At that time I realized that Matthew's purpose was to help other babies to live without facing the same thing he faced.Because he was born and lost his life, other babies would not die.Although many times you cannot tell what purpose it serves when someone dies, especially a child, take comfort in the fact that God does have a purpose for all of us, even when we can't see it,and those innocent lives that were lost, were lost for a reason. Life isn't fair, but love is unconditional.Merry Christmas to us all and may God send peace to our hearts.
